Minutes

Minutes for SCVFD Business Meeting held on April 12, 2008

The first potluck of the season was hosted by the Sugrue families and attended by 34  including Gale and
Kelly Rhamy and their family who have just purchased Whispering Pines Campground.  The attendance was
much higher than anticipated as we've had three days of much-needed snow and travel wasn't always the
best.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and followed with everyone in attendance
introducing themselves.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved by Dave Myers, seconded by Phil Schlief.

Rita Chapman gave the treasurer's report.  The complete report is available for review by any member as
desired.  Motion to approve by Judy Tobin and seconded by Jake Kammerer.

Tally Chapman reported Fire Department news.  John Gomez is currently taking fire classes in order to be
eligible to work fires as they occur.  New people in the community are encouraged to join the active
fire-fighting group as all hands are needed.  Tally, along with Uhl Donovan, also reported on the current
status of the Fire Hall Expansion project.   A contractors/builders meeting was held with Jim Bickett and
others prior to the potluck.  Jim will bring an excavation/foundation crew in to evaluate the building site.
Morry Crow attended to give an historical view of the past building projects.  It was strongly suggested
that the foundation work be done professionally and the remaining building done with local hands. John
Gomez emphasized the monies donated to date will just cover materials - everyone in the community will
be needed to do the actual building and to support those doing the physical labor. Work is scheduled to
being after 1 May 2008.

Nancy Donovan and Jodi Sugrue reported that the Chapel Services are scheduled for the upcoming summer.
Three other events are also scheduled for the Chapel. The Christmas Eve Service was very well attended
with general sentiment being to make the service a tradition.

Jake Kammerer presented Community Hall news.  He reports the out buildings will need to be painted this
summer.  Rita Chapman brought up the idea to move the Community Hall bell to the Chapel and put into
use.  Discussion included questions whether the Chapel bell tower was structurally strong enough to safely
handle the weight and motion.  Morry Crow concurred and recalled that the Hall bell rope was thrown up
into the belfry when the bell became a plaything.

John Gomez presented status of the Website.  Over 2000 original visitors to the site have been logged this
past year with July being the highest month for visitation.  He will be working to expand and improve the
history section and may include portions of Florence Burke's book.

Uhl reminded everyone that Morry Crow was featured in a recent FACES magazine.  Todd Tobin added that
Silver City community would be featured in an upcoming SOUTH DAKOTA MAGAZINE.

RECENT EVENTS
Community Updates include Jim Light being hospitalized at Ft Meade, the videos available for lending from
the Jeffers family, and Sunnyside residents thanking everyone for doing their part in keeping Sunnyside
quiet.

The Ice Cream Social hours of operation are 8am - 4pm.  Please note this change.

OLD BUSINESS
Phil Schielf reported that due to general feedback, the county has withdrawn the potential for Silver City
Road being named a Scenic Byway.  Phil believes this action isn't over yet and will keep us all informed.

Todd Tobin gave background information on the forest trail access/use plan.  No new updates are available
from the Forest Service at this time.

NEW BUSINESS
Jan Sohl, Silver City resident and artist, shared her idea for a "Plein Air Art Festival" held concurrent with the
Ice Cream Social/Volksmarch.  Jan's idea received general support from the community after hearing her
vision for the event.
John Gomez presented his idea for having Memorial Trees planted in the Silver City community area (private
property as well as possibly around the Community Hall) to commemorate the life of a community member
after their passing.  The family would pay costs. John is investigating the regulations involving the land
around the Community Hall with the Forest Service.
Jim McArthur wondered why it seems the Silver City Road doesn't get plowed on weekends.  Todd Tobin
suggested Jim contact the county regarding the issue.

Motion made to conclude the meeting by Jake Kamerer, second by Phil Schlieff.  Everyone reminded SCVFD
merchandise is for sale.  Meeting concluded.
